How to Make a Fabric Basket from a Layer Cake!
Creating a fabric basket using layer cake squares is a delightful and practical sewing project, perfect for organizing your space or gifting to others! Here's a step-by-step guide to creating your own layer cake fabric basket!
Materials Needed:
-
Layer Cake Squares: (2) 10" x 10" fabric squares.
-
Batting: (1) 10" x 10" square.
-
Spray Adhesive (505 Spray)
-
Buttons, needle, and thread
-
Basic Sewing Supplies: Sewing machine, iron, scissors, clips or pins, ruler, and marking pen.
Instructions:
- Spray a bit of adhesive to the batting and place (1) 10" square on top, right side up.
- Place the next fabric piece on top, right sides together.
- Sew a 1/4" seam around all four sides. Leave a small opening to be able to turn right side out.
- Clip your corners and turn right side out.
- Topstitch all the way around to close that opening.
- Fold the project in half, making it 5" x 10".
- Measure 2-1/4" up from the corner and mark that point.
- Measure 2-1/4" across and mark.
- Draw a line to connect those two dots. This is where you will sew.
- Repeat steps 7-9 on the opposite side.
- Once you've sewn on both drawn lines, open up your project as shown and repeat steps 7-9 for the remaining two corners.
- Once you've boxed all four corners, you're now ready to make your outside pockets! Push down the center of the "flaps" that were created at each corner. Place a pin to hold in place as you stitch down where the red lines are indicated. Do that for all four pockets.
- Fold the side corners down and secure in place with a button.
